June in Numbers

It's hard to believe that we're already 4 months into quarantine.

The academy has been closed down since March, and initially, our primary concern was ensuring that our three jiu-jitsu instructors would be able to pay their bills and put food on the table.

At Terere Kids Project we have 3 main instructors: Fabricio da Silva, Julio Nogueira, and Alexandre Ribeiro (Buda). Before COVID Fabricio received a full salary from the Academy (not the social project), Nogueira worked for free at the project at night and as a chauffeur during the day, and Buda made his money teaching private classes alongside Master Terere.

There is a lot of hustling going on, on a daily basis in order to make ends meant. That could mean parking cars, working constructions, take a side job at a bakery for a week, etc... but all those financial opportunities ended when the coronavirus shut down Rio.

That's why we stepped in.

We reallocated our Giving Tuesday donations and all other funds for our Snack program and competition fees in order to provide financial stability to our staff. As quarantine continues we have been able to raise enough money to include our entire staff as well as our volunteer kids instructor Vinicius and our English teacher Nathalia.

We appreciate all of the people that have donated through our COVID Relief page or have purchased FT hoodies from Favela Jiu Jitsu.

During quarantine, Vine has been making at-home training videos for the kids and sending them out to their mothers in our Whats App group class and Nathalia has been sending English challenges so the kids can practice on their own!
